Melanie Lynskey, star of “Yellowjackets,” opened up about the body-shaming she and other actresses experienced while filming “Coyote Ugly” in 2000.
“The females were all required to follow this regimen. The actress told The Hollywood Reporter, “It was ridiculous. I was a [size] four despite already starving myself and being as thin as I could be for this physique.
In the movie, Lynskey, who is now 45, played Gloria, Violet’s best friend. Piper Perabo played Gloria. The “Don’t Look Up” actress claimed that while she was filming, the original makeup artist, costume designer, and others gave her severe remarks.
The costume designer said, “Nobody warned me there would be girls like you,” as she continued, “and there were already people putting a lot of Spanx on me and being extremely dissatisfied when they saw me.
There was a lot of criticism of my appearance and body, as well as comments from makeup artists who said things like, “I’ll just help you out by giving you a bit more of a jawline and whatnot. Simply put, the feedback was that you weren’t beautiful. You are not attractive.
Later, Lynskey stated that she was not making reference to the costume designer who was given credit for creating the costumes for the film.
Wednesday afternoon, Lynskey tweeted, “The costume designer who first worked on Coyote Ugly departed for some reason, & a lovely compassionate woman named Marlene Stewart took over and she was AWESOME.”
She wrote, “The person credited was not; the first person was rude.” I had encounters with makeup experts offering to make my face seem better, but that did not happen on Coyote Ugly, so my response was a bit of a muddle. The hair and makeup team was among the best I’ve ever worked with, wonderful, and so friendly.
However, the body-shaming continued into the early 2000s.
Lynskey disclosed in January that she recently encountered a similar circumstance with a crew member while filming Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.”
“They questioned me, ‘What do you have planned?’ The producers will certainly get you a trainer. She told Rolling Stone, “They’d love to help you with this.”
