Law enforcement is seeking public assistance in locating a vehicle they believe was involved in the May 2021 shooting of 9-year-old Trinity Ottoson-Smith.
A maroon 2014 Ford Fusion with Minnesota licence plate 720 XRP is being sought by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. According to the BCA, the licence plates may have been removed and the vehicle painted a different colour.

On May 15, 2021, Trinity was shot while jumping on a trampoline in a Minneapolis yard. She was admitted to the hospital and died 12 days later.
After a shooting in her yard last week that left a man dead on the scene, debate rages over whether a 53-year-old Minneapolis homeowner is justified in claiming self-defense and property protection.
The Hennepin County Attorney’s office announced Monday that it is “deferring” a decision on charges in the Feb. 22 shooting at a residence on 25th Avenue South in Minneapolis, writing to FOX 9’s Paul Blume that more investigation is needed.
According to a search warrant issued in the case, the female homeowner, who FOX 9 will not name, shot and killed Martin Lee Johnson, 30, after he broke into her detached garage.
She told officers that she fired four warning shots into the air with a handgun before shooting him with a rifle when he advanced and seemed to reach into his waistband.
“It’s your fortress,” says the narrator. The castle includes your garage. “If someone enters your garage, they’re entering your home – your garage is your home,” criminal defence attorney Steve Meshbesher told FOX 9. Meshbesher isn’t currently linked to the case in any way.
Johnson’s family has subsequently stated that they do not believe the storey and have demanded to examine the evidence, which includes any house surveillance footage.
In a statement, Johnson’s aunt, Macey Wheeler, said, “We have received very little information on why and how Martin was killed.”
“Even if the father of two was breaking into a garage that night,” Johnsons’ cousin said Blume, “the homeowner had a duty to notify police instead of playing judge, jury, executioner, and God.”
They want murder charges filed, and a news conference and vigil are planned for Tuesday night.
Meshbesher, on the other hand, believes the homeowner has the law on her side, at least according to recent public court papers.
Authorities in Minneapolis are searching for a vehicle they believe was involved in the fatal shooting of 9-year-old Trinity Ottoson-Smith in May 2021.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is asking for the public’s help locating a maroon 2014 Ford Fusion with Minnesota license plate 720 XRP (pictured above). The vehicle’s licence plates may have been removed, and the car may have been painted a different colour since the May 15, 2021, shooting, according to the BCA.
D’Pree Shareef Robinson, 19, was charged with intentional second-degree homicide in Trinity’s death in February.
A man has been charged with the murder of Trinity Ottoson-Smith, a 9-year-old girl.
She was shot in the 2200 block of North Ilion Avenue in north Minneapolis while jumping on a trampoline in her backyard. She died in the hospital 12 days later.
According to court documents, the intended targets of the gunfire that killed Trinity were on the house’s side porch, with the trampoline separating them from the shooter Robinson.
One of the alleged intended targets was seen running after Robinson’s car, which investigators believe is the Ford Fusion mentioned earlier, and firing three shots.
According to court documents, Robinson purchased the Ford Fusion on May 12, 2021, just days before the shooting. After the shooting, he allegedly looked up ways to paint the vehicle on the internet.
